About My Lovely Daughter

My Lovely Daughter is a game about overcoming the loss of a loved one through forbidden alchemy experiments ... and murder. You are Faust, an amnesiac alchemist and father, who wakes up alone and confused only to discover that your lovely daughter has died. As you enter the first stages of grief, you do what everyone wishes they could do but can’t: bring back the dead with the power of alchemy.

To revive your daughter, you must perform forbidden alchemy experiments to restore her soul. You will have to create dozens of homunculi, raise them as if they were your own daughter, build relationships with them ... and then murder them to harvest their souls!

To support your experiments, you will also need to assign jobs to your homunculi, even sacrifice their bodies in order to sell their remnants, all to keep your income flowing and your research progressing. Perhaps, along the way, you will even recover your own memories and come to understand how this terrible situation came about.

Really cool art and premise. This could've been a truly unsettling experience. Instead, the gamplay almost immediately became too repetitive, clunky, and honestly just dull. Too bad. I would, however, be interested to see what else this developer does in the future.. This game will haunt my dreams. I am obsessed. The music runs through my mind, and I hear laughter in the background.

If you're into narrative-heavy games but need them to be attached to good gameplay mechanics, this is your game. It's easy to find yourself obsessing over it; which is fitting, given the theme of the game.

Just take care not to lose your own soul while trying to restore your daughter's.. This game is interesting, but seems like it's severely lacking certain things. It's not a bad game by any means, just the gameplay is too short for the price, and the plot starts to fall flat and anticlimatic towards the end.

I'd still say it's worth playing, but probably not at full price sadly. I would suggest waiting until it's 50% off.. As I brutally murdered yet another pseudo-daughter of my own creation, I thought to myself...

"Can I even do this anymore?"

Then the tears flowed. What the heck, tears? I'm trying to play video games.... This game has desensitized me.. tl;dr: Great idea, poor execution.

My Lovely Daughter is a mediocre game built on a fantastic premise. The idea that you need to get close to the homonculi you build in order to restore your daughter to life sets up a tragic game: Can you kill the creatures you get to know?

Unfortunately, the actual game fails to live up to this premise. The game very quickly descends into drudgery as you send mostly interchangeable homonculi on mostly interchangeable quests to get gold. The mid to late game is a slog of micromanagement without much pay off. The interactions are terribly written and disjointed and left me without any attachment to the homonculi, the villagers, or Faust himself.

And after all that, the ending is...Contrived. It took me ~6 hours total, which is *way* too short for a $10 game.. I dig a lot about this game, but it has numerous flaws.
First the good
-The game does a good job with setting. I found myself wanting to learn more about the people you interact with.
-The main character disagrees with me on that, they made him a jerk which really works
-The visuals and music go quite a bit on setting tone
-No really you play someone terrible and it may make you feel really awful.

And here's whats holding it back
-What you're trying to get to isn't clear. There are some hints that certainly took me in the wrong direction. The internal guide could be more clear about that.
-It can get pretty tedious. You're doing pretty much the same thing over and over again for hours. I would have liked if we could do more with the towns people. Even if its more just being a jerk to them.
-Quite predictable ending. To the point I felt like it undermined what I was doing. Your milleage may vary on that one though. (Trying not to spoil). I really wish there were an in between recommend option, like a meh. Like the trailer suggests, this is a game where you play an Alchemist who wakes up with no memories and a daughter whose soul is removed. His entire goal in the game is to save his daughter's soul and bring her back to life; to do this, he makes and destroies many homunculi girls as part of a month long ritual to attempt to put his daughter's soul back in her body.

I did really enjoy most of this game. I really liked the dark story telling with the homunculi girls, they were all very interesting to me and had unique personalities. My favorite part of the story were the letters they would send Faust, some girls would become terrified of you, some actually were willing sacrifices, and others were convinced they were different. These letters unfortunately had no efffect on game play, but I really enjoyed them, and it made the sacrificing more important narratively. Personally, I'm more of a story player, so these letters as well as befriending the villegers really made me not care about the grinding game play. It is repetative, but I didn't really mind. I wanted to make all the daughters and get all the letters and most of the semi-endings. So I really recommend the first 5.7/5.8 hours.

The problem is the ending. I won't spoil it here, but I feel like to enjoy this game you have to be a story player *because* the game play is repetative, but then to enjoy the story, the actual plot fails it. The ending doesn't make a lot of sense. It is a plot twist so you could argue that its supposed to be unexpected, but it introduces so many new elements to it and there is no hinting from the game, except for one character arguably. The ending does have a sense of poetry, but the convoluted and arguably out of character decisions make it fall flat. It seems like the story in general was meant to be a commentary/mirror for child labor, which I think was very strong in the beginning, but the ending really got away from that story, which was the heart of the game and the experience. It does comment on the type of person Faust is, but theres nothing else. The reason I bought this game was to explore Faust's relationships with the homunculi, but that was totally forgotten in the end for a convoluted and out of character ending that wanted to be a twist and served no other purpose.

I would recommend it at a lower price. Buy it when its on sale, and go for the letters. Other then that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How’s your journey with Faust so far? If you are longing for more content to help Faust reviving his daughter, or if you have done everything the game has to offer, then we have a good news for you.

As some of you might have noticed, we just rolled out a new update for My Lovely Daughter. The update was made to address the issue of repetition and will help players to not only finish the game but also to help find all of the game’s endings. For those players who have already unlocked all of the story conclusions, we also have prepared two new endings to be discovered.

Here are the details of the new updates:

• New Feature - Homunculi job initiative based on their level and affection. Homunculi will ask Faust whether they can work in a place that they like, automating some activities in the later part of the game and help you focus on other stuff in the game
  
• New items - Wreath of Ecstasy and Cursed Twig. Both items are used to increase the affection of all homunculi and lower the rate of affection loss caused by work
  
• New endings - We also have added two new endings to be discovered. We won’t spoil it for you, but both endings got something to do with alternative closure for Faust

Last but not least, to accompany your extended journey and expand your experience with My Lovely Daughter, we have just released the soundtrack and digital artbook of the game as a DLC. You can get the DLC through the Steam store link below.

Thank you for your feedback for the controller support - beta version of My Lovely Daughter. The feature is now available along with other additional small improvements on the latest version of the game (Ver. 1.06). Here’s the complete list of changes:

• Added Homunculus interactions when Faust spends time with them.
  
• Our composer has fine-tuned most of the BGM and SFX.
  
• Added new expressions to villagers.
